Causes Of Depression

Let there be no doubt that depression is a serious mental illness that requires months and sometimes years of treatment on the path to a cure.  Millions of Americans across the United States are affected by depression each and every year.  Only about a third of them will seek treatment, and that makes it worse.  Many Americans don’t want to be considered crazy, so because depression is considered a mental affliction they avoid diagnosis.  Instead of being considered mentally ill, people try to manage the problem themselves.  Depression is more common- place than you might think and it will not go away on its own.

What are the causes for depression?  There are many factors to consider, so the answer isn’t simple.  The list is quite long. Here are a few of the parts of depression.  Many medical professionals believe that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.  This may be the case, but what causes that imbalance?  The causes can be genetic, mental or even come from the environment.  There are those inflicted that never really determine what spurned their depression.  If diagnosis of another serious medical condition happens, sometimes people become depressed.

The loss of a loved one or treasured possession can have a tremendous impact resulting in depression. Long periods of emotional, sexual or other physical abuses can result in depression.  When people abuse drugs and/or alcohol the result is often depression.  People’s mental states are fragile.  If exposed to the wrong pressures, depression can result.  There can also be a genetic element to depression. Those afflicted have a family history of the disease .  Many prescription drugs can cause depression.  It has been clinically proven that some high blood pressure medication can cause depression.

A major cause of depression is stress.  Stress can derive from many different areas in our life.  Even positive events such as a marriage, a new baby or winning an award can cause stress.  People tend to stress when they face the unknown, like a new job or new financial obligations.  When friends or loved ones come into conflict with an individual – a co-worker or loved one – the result is stress.  Some people have a low threshold for stress.  They’re affected by events and activities that to others seem to not be stressful.  By determining the cause, medical professionals have a much better chance of administering a treatment.  Seek medical help if you or a loved one suffer from depression.

Anger Management For Teens

Anger is a perfectly natural emotion and, in and of itself, is nothing to be ashamed of. However, when it’s allowed to get out of control, it’s a different story. It can wreak relationships, cause health problems, and make your own life miserable. This is especially a problem for teenagers, who may still be learning how to deal with their inner emotions. A search of the web can find much information about anger management for teens.

There are occasions when it’s right to become angry. If you see someone damaging your property, or harming either you or someone you care about, then it’s only normal. Life’s little irritations, like seeing a classmate receive higher grades than you, or hearing that your best friend has backed out of a scheduled activity with you, might not be an appropriate reason for outrage.

Many people behave in injurious ways when they lose control of their emotions. Some resort to violence either against other people or against themselves. Others may break things, abuse drugs or alcohol, or drive recklessly. Yet others may turn their emotions inward, causing them to fall into depression.

Some teenagers may have been taught conflicting things about when it’s right to be angry. They may have been told that they must never let their feelings show, so they keep their outrage bottled up until they finally explode. Others may be following the bad examples of either their peers or their parents.

If you search the web, you’ll find websites that offer recommendations for either parents or their teenagers.

The websites that are directed toward teenagers discuss the consequences of not controlling one’s emotions, and ways to get emotions back under control. Some may also discuss conflict resolution.

Websites that are geared more for parents talk about tips on how to help children learn to handle their emotions in appropriate ways. They may also have a list of warning signs to help parents determine if their child really does have a problem.

Other websites belong to vendors who sell either courses, books, or seminars. These may either be for helping parents learn how to handle out-of-control children, or they may be things that a parent can purchase for their children. You’ll also find a few that advertise therapeutic academies or retreats.

If you need more information about anger management for teens, your favorite search engine should be able to help.

Things to Know About Depression Medications

A few days of feeling sad or depressed does not mean depression.  Depression can last for years, it’s a serious illness.  Studies have show that around 15 million Americans are affected by this illness each and every year.  And yet, sadly, only about 1/3 of those people seek medical care.  All too often people avoid recognizing or admitting that they suffer from depression because of the negative archetypes associated with mental illnesses.  Depression gets worse with time.  It will get worse without treatment.  Ignorance in this case isn’t bliss.

Many things cause depression.  Physical and emotional problems, chemical issues, even DNA all play a part.  The day to day lives of the victim may even have a role.  It can be caused by stress brought on by even more detrimental factors.  Depression is a very complicated disease.  We also recognize the intricacy of man’s mind.  Work continues into the mind and brain and how they work, what makes them tick.  A chemical imbalance in the brain causes depression, that’s known.  Researches learn more about this complex series of actions and reactions with passing time.  Better treatments come from more knowledge.

Depression can be treated with a host of available medications.  Of course the market is full of ‘quick fix’ antidotes.  Clinical tests to prove something really works in treating depression are required.  Not too long ago people who were considered mentally ill were thrown into asylums, never again to be seen or heard.  Fortunately that has all been changed.  It was 1988 when Prozac, an anti-depressant, first came into wide use in America.  Although it has side effects it is widely used and it is effective.

Since that time more and more use has been made of a new class of anti-depressants.  Currently depression is being treated with SSRI or (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) such as Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox.  All have been proven effective but come with varied side effects.  The market is also ripe with herbal medications and treatments.  The ingredient in St. John’s Wort extract, heperforin, is present in those that prove every bit as effective as anti-depressant drugs.   Some herbal remedies don’t contain this ingredient in the proper strength so they don’t work.  Research and information are your friends when it comes to the right medications for depression.
